La maldición de la ley de los promedios y la tiranía de los números : : ¿Por qué Guillermo Vilas no alcanzó el número 1 en tenis? Metodología alternativa, reconstrucción del ranking y resultados 1974-1977

Guillermo Vilas dominated the 1977 tennis season, winning 16 titles in 21 ATP finals, a feat that has not yet been surpassed, including by the big three (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic). Between 1977 and 1978, he reached the final of 5 of the 6 Grand Slams of the season, crowning himself in 3 of them. Despite all these achievements, the Men´s Professional Tennis (ATP) did not recognize him as number 1 in the world, this privilege falling to the American Jimmy Connors. This work analyzes the controversy over why Vilas did not reach the top of tennis and carries out a reconstruction of tournaments, goals and accumulated scores and the ranking for Jimmy Connors, Björn Borg, and Guillermo Vilas stating that Vilas was number 1 in the world for the first time in July 1975 and for the second time in the 1977 season. The tyranny of numbers and the curse of the law of means (and some bureaucrats) have denied Vilas the recognition he deserves. Even though he officially becomes the player who has been number 2 for the longest time without having accessed the first position, Vilas is a winner of his life, beloved and respected at a global level. Possibly the ATP does not want to recognize Villas as number 1 so as not to affect its reputation, because it should recognize that there are serious errors in the ranking calculations, and this could give rise to subsequent complaints. There is a historical precedent in the Women´s Tennis Association (WTA) from which the Australian Evonne Goolagong was recognized in 2007, 31 years later, as number 1 in the world in the 1976 season. He would have had to reach the ATP to settle a pending debt with Vilas in particular and with Argentine sports in general.

Entre 1977 y 1978, llegó a la final de 5 de los 6 Grand Slams de la temporada, y se coronó en 3 de ellos. A pesar de todos estos logros, la Asociación de tenistas profesionales (ATP) no lo reconoció como número 1 del mundo, ese privilegio quedó para el estadounidense Jimmy Connors. Este trabajo analiza la controversia sobre por qué Vilas no llegó a la cima del tenis y realiza una reconstrucción de los torneos, puntajes y puntajes acumulados y el ranking para Jimmy Connors, Björn Borg y Guillermo Vilas, y afirma que Vilas fue número 1 del mundo por primera vez en julio de 1975 y por segunda vez en la temporada 1977.
